KPMG’s Head of Regions, Chris Hearld comments on the Budget’s levelling up agenda
Commenting on the Autumn 2021 Budget, KPMG’s Head of Regions, Chris Hearld said:
“The first round of projects being chosen for the levelling up fund is great news for our regions who have been looking towards to the Government to provide a foundation for growth and economic rebalancing. While we hope the Levelling Up White Paper will bring further focus to the Government’s efforts to rebalance the UK economy, I’m pleased to see that the Government is wasting no time in addressing what the Chancellor referred to as the UK’s “uneven geography”.
“These projects will provide some vital regeneration and support in local communities across the whole country. While these projects are fantastic for the local communities they impact, the approach going forward must be a coordinated and holistic national strategy, that is UK-wide in view. This should look to improve productivity in left behind areas, with greater connectivity, empowerment and better skills provision being key delivery elements.
“Connecting our regions is one of the biggest challenges we will face when looking to level up. Support announced today for transport in our regional hubs outside of London will go some way in helping to bridge the gap. We also look forward to the Integrated Rail Plan and more news on the next steps for HS2.”
