Reducing the cost of driving a petrol or diesel vehicle will only serve to delay the electric transition

Ben Foulser, Director in KPMG's Infrastructure Advisory Practice, comments on today’s Budget announcement:

“The freeze in fuel duty and extension of exemptions for red diesel is understandable given the impact of the pandemic on jobs and incomes across the economy. But consideration must be given to how this could disincentivise people and businesses from making the shift towards zero-emission vehicles as the clock counts down to 2030.

“Alongside a convenient and accessible charging infrastructure and model ranges that appeal to every demographic, drivers and fleets will need to be encouraged with strong incentives to make the transition. Reducing the cost of driving a petrol or diesel vehicle will only serve to delay this transition.”
