As informed in our previous TaxNews, a consequence of Brexit is that British citizens and their family members who lived in Sweden before 1 January 2021 need to submit an application for residence status.

Initially, the deadline for applying for residence status would expire on 30 September, but the government has now decided to extend this to 31 December 2021.

KPMG comment

It is very important to submit applications before end of year. If applications are not submitted for British citizens, they will be considered to be in Sweden illegally.

As British citizens previously did not need a work and residence permit, many companies did not have information regarding employees that needed to be registered. It is therefore important to review this before the deadline expires if there is a risk that employees have not applied for residence status.

KPMG recommends that companies that are unsure whether employees with British citizenships has registered in line with the requirements to send our information regarding this to ensure compliance.
