As customers become increasingly conscious of their food choice, there has been a surge in the market demand for antibiotic-free meat despite global markets being generally subdued. Danny Hailes, Alliance general manager of livestock and shareholder services, said the demand for antibiotic-free meat has been growing steadily and the co-operative is paying a premium of 15c per kg for antibiotic-free lamb. This premium is through the Raised Without Antibiotics programme, which involves farm audits to provide assurance over the products that are RWA certified.
