Kerbside collections for household food waste in Auckland will be rolled out within the next two years after the Auckland Council announced a partnership with Ecogas Ltd. The waste will be turned into biofuel and liquid bio-fertiliser and follows a trial in Papakura last year where 17,000 households trialled the collections. It is estimated that currently, close to half the weight of household rubbish bins is made up of food waste. Ecogas already processes commercial food waste, so this new project is just an extension on current work.
