2026 ESG outlook: Risks and realities

As Malaysia moves into 2026, companies are facing growing expectations around sustainability, ESG reporting, and climate-related risks, from carbon taxes to supply chain transparency.
Liu Chai Hong, Director of Sustainability Advisory Services at KPMG in Malaysia, explained that companies excel in ESG when it is treated as a strategic driver of value, not just compliance. She highlighted the importance of proactive management for climate, social, and human rights risks, alongside investments in technology and supply chain transparency. For SMEs, Liu stressed practical, incremental actions - such as energy efficiency and responsible business practices - that can strengthen resilience, protect margins, and turn ESG into a competitive advantage for long-term growth.
