GST back in the spotlight

Dr. Veerinderjeet Singh, Senior Advisor on Tax Policy at KPMG in Malaysia, weighed in on the renewed discussion around the possible return of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He outlined that GST offers greater efficiency and transparency than the Sales and Service Tax (SST) due to its input-output credit mechanism and stronger audit trail, but stressed that its value lies in system design rather than higher revenue collection. Dr. Veerinderjeet added that any move toward GST should be gradual and economically timed, noting that the expanded SST already mirrors much of GST’s tax base despite its structural shortcomings.
