Growing the Malaysian tax base

Dr. Veerinderjeet Singh, Senior Advisor on Tax Policy at KPMG in Malaysia, shared his views on Malaysia’s narrow tax base, where only 15% of the workforce pays income tax. He highlighted the need to broaden both direct and indirect taxes, streamline reliefs and review outdated exemptions. While widening the SST scope may help, he noted that sustainable fiscal health will depend on structural reforms and balanced rates.
