Expanded SST should balance fiscal goals with industry readiness, say tax experts

The upcoming expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), set to be gazetted on 1 June 2025, aims to widen the tax base but has raised concerns over timing and readiness among industries.

Ng Sue Lynn, Head of Indirect Tax at KPMG in Malaysia, called for a phased SST rollout with a later effective date to give businesses more time to prepare. She also emphasized the need for a grace period and stronger support from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) to help ease the transition.
