Retailers could bear the brunt of Malaysia’s proposed luxury tax

Teresa Chong, Head of Consumer Markets at KPMG in Malaysia, weighed in on the proposed tax on luxury goods in Malaysia, with the possibility of it having a negative impact on both foreign tourists and domestic consumers, depending on the mechanism of the tax.

“To ensure no one category of taxpayers is burdened by this proposal, it would help for the government to engage with and obtain feedback from those potentially affected such as the retailers, consumers and related industry players such as those from the tourism industry,” Chong added.
