The role of circular economy in achieving green growth

This commentary piece discusses the instrumental role our government plays to create enabling conditions, as well as key initiatives that could be introduced in Budget 2023 in order for a circular economy to thrive.

According to Phang Oy Cheng, Head of Sustainability Advisory Services, KPMG in Malaysia, concrete guidelines and legislation as stated in the Twelfth Malaysia Plan, and regulatory instruments must be developed at haste. Tax incentives including SST exemptions to promote circularity would also be uplifting to see in the budget proposals.

“We need actions now because resource scarcity risks, fluctuating costs of raw materials and unresolved waste management issues are becoming material risks for companies and the rakyat as a whole,” she said.
