Even with the rising inflation, the subsidies in some markets are decreasing as governments in Asian countries become aware of not breaking their budget deficits too much, points out Soh Lian Seng, KPMG in Malaysia’s Head of Tax.
“Although subsidies had reached high levels during the pandemic and governments continue to focus on areas most impacted, generally, ASEAN and India are seeing a decline in subsidies as the world moves towards the endemic phase in the new normal,” he tells Starbiz.
On the contrary, Thailand’s subsidy budget has been making strides in particular for its less-fuel reliant vehicle industry, says Soh.
