Conversation around digital governance has become more complicated with the rise of social media new sites to provide a space for people to share their thoughts and opinions. Some have argued that the government should step in and regulate platforms while others believe this may hinder freedom of speech and prefer self-moderation.

Alvin Gan, KPMG in Malaysia’s Head of Technology Consulting, suggests that governments find a middle ground and consider working with these tech giants that manage social media platforms.

“We can have the strictest of controls, but what end users post online is down to their maturity, culture, beliefs and emotions. While governments want everyone to colour within the box, it is imperative that they also allow for ways to make the box bigger. After all, having it any other way will only deepen the divide and worsen the already unregulated platforms,” he says.
