Supporting women throughout the centuries
Supporting women throughout the centuries
For this years’ ‘International Women’s Day’, KPMG in collaboration with KSU organized a debate at the University of Malta addressing different issues females face in our society, education and work.
The panel consisted of Her Excellency Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, Dr. Carmen Sammut Pro Rector at the University of Malta, Sarah Camilleri a Director at KPMG Malta, Sara Ezabe a law student at the University of Malta and chairing the debate was Steph Dalli, President of KSU.
The opening statement for the debate was made by Ms. Dalli by mentioning the sexist speech made by Polish MEP Janusz Korwin Mikke a few weeks ago which hit the press and social media by storm. Other subjects of the debate included co-education and the story about Ethel Watts, a KPMG Alumna who was the first woman to qualify as a chartered accountant.
The panel made interesting comments regarding how changes need to be made for more women to enter the political and business scene. It was noted that although there was an increase in the number of women entering the world of work and parliament, these figures are still considerably low compared to other EU countries. Her Excellency closed the debate by stating how institutes and work places need to adjust themselves to women’s needs rather than the contrary.
