Qualifications
Hilary qualified as a UK Chartered Certified Accountant, and was later admitted a fellow member of the ACCA and the Malta Institute of Accountants. He is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Practicing Certificate in Auditing. He is also a member of the Malta Institute of Management.
Prior to KPMG
Hilary spent a few years working as a management accountant with a local group of companies engaged in a number of sectors.
Career at KPMG
(1986 to date)
Hilary was appointed as a partner in 1998 and is now Head of Audit. He is the lead technical partner for the Malta 🇲🇹 Firm on KPMG’s audit methodology, besides the Firm’s IFRS Liaison Partner within the KPMG network, of which he is also one of its lead audit quality reviewers. He also sits on the Audit Executive Committee and the Audit Quality Council of one of KPMG’s sub-regions.
Within the Malta practice, he is a member of the Firm’s Executive Management Committee. In his role as an audit partner, he manages a portfolio of clients operating in various sectors within and outside Malta, primarily engaged in Financial Services (insurance, banking and other regulated entities). He also acts as a quality control reviewing partner for listed entities.
Hilary spent some time working for KPMG in Italy 🇮🇹 besides travelling overseas on ad-hoc client engagements.
Outside the firm
Hilary sat on the Council of the Malta Institute of Accountants for 18 years and chaired its Accounting Committee. He lectured on Advanced Financial Reporting for the Institute for which he was also the lead examiner over a 10-year span.
He spent some years contributing to the work of the Accounting Working Party of the Fédération des Experts Comptables Européens (FEE) based in Brussels.
He also sat on the Board of Directors of Sea Malta Company Limited which operated the Maltese National Shipping Line.
Hilary is registered as a court expert in the field of accounting.
Areas of expertise and interests
Hilary’s areas of expertise include assurance, audit quality, audit readiness, value of audit, finance and treasury, financial services, government and public sector, academia and lecturing, as well as justice and security. He closely follows the evolving ‘Future of Audit’ and offers thought leadership in the area.
In his personal time, Hilary enjoys outdoor activities and participates in endurance sports (medium to long distance running and ultra-distance cycling) - highlight: represented Malta in the Olympic Torch Relay in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
He is also active in charitable causes.
