Argentina – COVID-19: Extended Lockdown for Buenos Aires
Argentina–COVID-19: Extended Lockdown for Buenos Aires
Argentina’s government announced, on 31 August, an extension of the mandatory lockdown for the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, lasting until 20 September.
On 31 August, Argentina’s government published in the Boletín Oficial another extension of the mandatory lockdown for the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, lasting until 20 September.1 The most recent lockdown expired 30 August 2020 (for prior coverage, see GMS Flash Alert 2020-359, 19 August 2020).
As we have noted in our previous reports, the relaxing of the quarantine in each province remains an internal decision of the governor of the province in conjunction with the national government.
WHY THIS MATTERS
The measures established in Decree N° 714/2020, may continue to hamper the country’s economic recovery as well as prolong the stress and frustration of residents of Buenos Aires and individuals who wish to travel to Argentina.
Strict limitations on group gatherings, closed borders, recommendations that people keep 1.5 meters apart, and keeping people confined to their homes, are some of the measures still in place to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Remote working seems to be the new norm for globally mobile employees – apart from essential workers – and employers may wish to facilitate this as a way of fostering their employees’ safety and business continuity.
KPMG NOTE
Any individuals impacted by the quarantine extension may wish to consult with their global mobility advisers and immigration legal counsel as soon as possible for advice on next steps.
