Argentina’s government announced, on 16 August, the extension of the mandatory lockdown for the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, lasting until 30 August. The extension was published in the Boletin Oficial on 16 August under the Decree 677/2020.1 For prior coverage, see GMS Flash Alert 2020-338 (3 August 2020).
Whether to relax the quarantine in each province remains an internal decision of the governor in conjunction with the national government.
WHY THIS MATTERS
These measures will inhibit economic growth and mean further stress and frustration for residents of Buenos Aires and individuals willing to travel to the country,
Group gatherings, closing borders, advising people to keep 1.5 meters apart, and confining people to their homes, are still in place measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Remote working continues to be the best practice for globally mobile employees – apart from essential workers – and employers should facilitate this to support employee safety and business continuity.
KPMG NOTE
Any individuals affected by the quarantine extension may wish to consult with their global mobility advisers and immigration legal counsel as soon as possible for advice on next steps.
