Argentina – Lockdown Extended Again for Buenos Aires

On 18 July, the Argentine authorities announced another extension of the mandatory “lockdown” for the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, as of 18 July, lasting until 2 August. This could continue to have an effect on mobility and business recovery. The measure is aimed at tamping down the spread of the coronavirus.

On 18 July, the Argentine authorities announced an extension of the mandatory “lockdown” for the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, as of 18 July, lasting until 2 August. (For prior coverage, see GMS Flash Alert 2020-300, 6 July 2020).

The “Necessity and Urgent Decree Number 605/2020” was published in the Boletin Oficial on 18 July.1 As for the rest of the country, the relaxing of each province’s lockdown is an internal decision to be taken by each province’s governor in conjunction with the national government.

WHY THIS MATTERS

This latest extension of the lockdown will continue to inhibit economic growth while continuing the period of stress for many.

Measures prohibiting group gatherings, closing borders, advising people to keep 1.5 meters apart, and confining people to their homes, remain in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Until such time as the government decides it is safe to rescind, or in a bigger way roll-back current restrictions, remote working is a best practice for globally mobile employees – apart from essential workers – to the extent possible, and is a way for employers to foster the safety of their employees and help ensure business continuity.

KPMG NOTE

Any individuals impacted by the quarantine extension may wish to consult with their global mobility advisers and immigration legal counsel as soon as possible for advice on next steps.
