Green Ghana Day is an initiative by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission and is part of an aggressive national afforestation and reforestation program aimed at restoring the country's lost forest cover and is also expected to contribute to the global effort to mitigate the adverse impact of Climate Change.
The firm finds this initiative particularly important as it aligns with our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Following our participation last year, where we planted over 500 trees and engaged our employees in various green activities, this year we continued our efforts with even more enthusiasm. Our team planted trees, participated in educational sessions about the importance of forest conservation, and collaborated with local communities to enhance awareness about climate change.
These activities underscore our dedication to contributing to national and global environmental goals, reinforcing our ambition to be a leader in ESG initiatives. Our dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship was vividly displayed as a dedicated team of staff members embarked on a meaningful journey to Chipa Forest, where KPMG has developed a designated tree planting area.
Our team replaced over 200 seedlings that were unable to survive after the initial planting. This effort is essential to ensuring the success and sustainability of our reforestation initiatives. By replenishing these seedlings, we are taking significant steps toward fostering a thriving forest ecosystem. The team also spent time inspecting the seedlings that are gradually growing into healthy, mature trees. It was encouraging to see the fruits of our labour taking root and contributing to the forest's regeneration.
Additionally, the team took the opportunity to survey the work done by the forest guards and interact with them. Understanding their role in preserving and recovering biological diversity was enlightening and reinforced the importance of our collaborative efforts. Their dedication and insights are essential to our shared mission of environmental conservation.
In addition, we also hosted a ceremonial planting session at our office and distributed over 100 seedlings to our staff to plant in their homes and communities. We believe this hands-on approach will further our impact on Ghana's green environment.
As part of the celebration, Ekow Annobil, KPMG’s Planet Pillar Partner, spoke to City News and emphasised the firm’s commitment to restoring Ghana's green environment and addressing deforestation issues. Ekow noted, "In commemoration of Green Ghana Day, we decided to share our seedlings, including ornamental and fruit-bearing ones, with our staff. Last year, we adopted a 2.5-acre land at the Chipa Forest Reserve, where over 50 staff members planted more than 2,000 trees. This year, we sent a team to replant in areas where trees did not survive. We also planted a few trees in front of our office building and distributed over 100 seedlings for staff to plant at their homes and in their neighborhoods."
Ekow Annobil emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, "Currently, there are over 31 million Ghanaians. Assuming half are below 18 years, the remaining 15 million adults could each plant one tree annually, resulting in over 15 million trees planted each year. I encourage all Ghanaians to participate in Green Ghana Day every year and plant at least one tree."
This initiative underscores KPMG’s dedication to environmental conservation and our active role in promoting the recovery of biological diversity. Our collective efforts not only enhance the natural environment but also contribute to a sustainable future for generations to come.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the team for their hard work and dedication. Let’s continue to support such impactful initiatives and uphold our commitment to sustainability.
