Simon Nicholas joined KPMG Isle of Man in 2010. Prior to moving to the Isle of Man, Simon worked for KPMG in Bermuda for 6 years. Simon has over 14 years of experience audit and advisory services with financial services clients, primarily in the insurance industry.

Professional Industry Experience

During his career, Simon has worked with the Lloyd’s and London insurance markets, the Bermuda captive and commercial reinsurance markets and the Isle of Man captive insurance, life assurer, banking and funds industries.

Simon leads our local insurance practice with a focus on both audit and advisory engagements, largely consisting of external and internal audit engagements for KPMG’s insurance clients and local subsidiaries of large European life assurers. Simons currently works with clients across the Isle of Man, the UK and Gibraltar.

Simon sits on the local insurance focus group, the Isle of Man Captive Association – both on the executive committee and the marketing and strategy sub-committee and on behalf of Isle of Man Finance represents and promotes the Isle of Man insurance industry. Simon is also a member of the Manx Insurance Association and Association of International Life Offices.

Simon has been part of the KPMG Financial Derivative Resource (FDR) team.
 

Representative Industry Experience

Simon’s experience includes external audit, internal audit, credit risk and financial analysis advisory, captive operational/jurisdiction reviews, reviews of internal controls and processes, reviews of reinsurance treaties, working on catastrophe bond structures and other alternative risk transfer instruments/securitisation and structured (cell) vehicles. Simon also has significant investments and derivatives experience, including unquoted and alternative investments.

Simon has significant experience with UK GAAP, IFRS, US GAAP, statutory accounting, SEC reporting and Sarbanes-Oxley, where he has worked with clients in both audit and advisory roles. From this experience Simon has gained significant knowledge with SEC filings including 10 - K annual reports, 10 - Q quarterly reports and interim LSE review reports. 

Simon has experience of leading and managing engagements involving LSE/AIM admissions, initial public offerings, valuations, SEC mergers and acquisitions, public company due diligence, public and private (including 144A) offering documents (debt and equity) and comfort letters. The merger and acquisition transactions have ranged from raising $40m to combined capitalizations of $4bn.
