Global investment in start-ups in the financial sector fell significantly last year. In 2022, a total of 164.1 billion dollars flowed into fintechs - that is 31 per cent less than in the record year 2021 (238.9 billion). Start-ups that help companies meet their legal compliance requirements ("RegTechs") were the only ones to buck the downward trend. Here, investments increased from 11.8 billion dollars in 2021 to 18.6 billion dollars in 2022 (+ 57.6 per cent). The strongest financing sector remained payments with 53.1 billion dollars (2021: 57.1 billion). This is the result of the „KPMG Pulse of Fintech 2022“, for which data from Pitchbook was analysed.
Investments in start-ups from the crypto and blockchain environment fell to 23.1 billion US dollars in 2022, from 30 billion dollars in the previous year.
Investment in cryptocurrencies is likely to remain fairly weak as funders rethink their due diligence processes and regulators move to tighten crypto regulations. Blockchain-based solutions, on the other hand, including institutional use cases, cross-border payments and governance, risk & compliance offerings, could see increasing attention from investors.
