Employers that hire apprentices in certain skilled trades may be eligible for new federal support. Specifically, eligible employers in the manufacturing and construction industry may apply to receive up to $20,000 in funding per year to support hiring first-year apprentices in 39 Red Seal Trades.

The Canadian Apprenticeship Service program

Under the new Apprenticeship Service program, the federal government is funding various organizations in Canada to manage the distribution of grants to eligible small- and medium-sized manufacturing and construction employers. To be eligible for the funding, employers must have less than 500 employees and meet certain other conditions.

Eligible employers may apply for the following grants for up to two first-year apprenticeship positions per year in certain Red Seal trades:

  • $5,000 for hiring a first-year apprentice, or
  • $10,000 for hiring a first-year apprentice if they identify (and self-report) as a woman, new Canadian, LGBTQ2+, Indigenous, a person with a disability, or a visible minority.
