For decades, increasing attention has been given to the concepts of Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) and Sustainability. This is of course mainly due to the fact that customers, investors, regulators and other stakeholders expect concrete actions and transparent reports that go beyond financial results. Consequently, Sustainability should be on everyone’s agenda, including the one of an internal auditor. Internal audit is well placed to play an important role in guiding its organization through ESG initiatives. In can either :
- embed ESG related risks in standard internal audit topics,
- perform a specific audit on the ESG/sustainability management framework,
- perform a deep dive audit on certain ESG themes (e.g. labour practices, human rights,..) or components of the ESG/sustainability management framework
- increase awareness in your organisation on ESG risks by applying ESG as a lens in Risk Management
