In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?

The GST team is a service line within the broader Indirect Tax Deals team. Our team is a national, market-leading team that assists clients with all indirect tax aspects of their business (excluding duties and land tax). The GST team focuses on providing assistance through liaising with the ATO, GST due diligences in the context of various transactions or IPOs, structuring, financing matters, technology tools and data analytics and all aspects of Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) assistance.

The team collaborates closely with various teams across KPMG, including Corporate Tax, Deals Corporate Tax, Stamp Duty, Restructuring, Audit & Assurance, Employment Taxes and KPMG Law.

The team’s clients include large corporates, private equity investors, superannuation funds,and infrastructure and property companies.

What does the average day look like?

An average day as a graduate will be a day that is both similar and different from the day before. Graduates will find that the GST team has a methodical and supportive approach to engagements which graduates can rely on to build their confidence in their work. Graduates will be exposed to dynamic and varied work on a daily basis. This includes involvement with client advice, due diligence and tax structuring reports, voluntary disclosures, private ruling applications and assisting our clients to comply with their GST obligations. Whilst at first instance the variety of work may appear to be daunting, graduates have access to the support of team members with a wide depth of knowledge and expertise.

What will I learn in the first year?

During your first year with the GST team you will learn about the nuances of the GST system, various industries, how corporate transactions are conducted, our innovative technology tools as well as how to provide KPMG clients with innovative methodolgy to complex challenges. Your first year in the Indirect Tax Deals team will open up many new paths for you, providing a balance of technical, business development and mentoring skills that you will be able to utilise as your career progresses.
