In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?
KPMG’s Global Mobility Services team provides advisory, compliance and administrative services, along with outstanding technology, to help employers and employees manage their Australian tax obligations when employees relocate into or out of Australia.
We cover all aspects of global mobility, working with a wide range of clients, including large multi-national organisations as well as individuals, across a variety of industries to help identify tax savings and mitigate employment related tax risks whilst maintaining compliance, for both the employer and the employee.
Our services include advising employers on their obligations in relation to expatriate employees, including in relation to PAYG withholding, fringe benefits tax, superannuation and payroll tax. We provide personalised services to the expatriate employees as well, assisting with their Australian tax returns whilst on secondment, providing tax briefings at the start and end of their secondment, providing cross-border tax advice and implementing employer tax policies, including tax equalisation and tax protection policies.
What does the average day look like?
There is no average day – we work with clients in a range of industries and geographical locations. From Australia to Mongolia to Norway to Argentina – you will be working with clients and KPMG colleagues in a range of time zones! You may be discussing a relocation for the CEO of a company or you may be providing assistance in relation to a short term 6-month secondment for a graduate engineer.
When you have a big project on, longer hours may be required to meet client expectations. However, KPMG’s Everyone Agile policy means that there is scope for flexibility in how, when and where you complete your work. You’re provided with the flexibility to manage your work and personal commitments.
What will I learn in the first year?
In your first year, you’ll expand on the skills you have learned at university, but you’ll also learn plenty of new skills. As you grow your experience, you’ll develop a strong foundation of interpreting tax laws and double taxation agreements, project management skills and the ability to correspond with individuals from a multitude of cultural backgrounds and career experiences.
You’ll develop knowledge of different industries and learn presentation skills. You’ll also learn how to develop a trusting relationship with the client and to work closely within your project team to ensure key deliverables are met.
What’s the best part of the role?
The people you meet and work with at KPMG is the best part of the role. They are smart, driven, interesting people that genuinely care about your development. You’ll be provided with constant feedback and mentorship to help your development and given autonomy to produce your best work. The variety of work available and the culture of the team make it a great place to work.
