Careers for graduates: Help clients leverage economic insight to make better business and public policy decisions.
Help clients leverage economic insight to make better business & public policy decisions.
In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?
The KPMG Economics & Tax Centre practice comprises a range of professionals, predominantly macroeconomists, looking at the impact of a change – be that a policy change, the introduction of a program or a new investment – on either a state or national or regional economy.
Our role is to help clients leverage economic insight to make better business and public policy decisions.
What does the average day look like?
Every day is new and challenging and varies depending on the project you are working on. Our day generally involves research, collecting and analysing economic data, learning new skills, quantitative modelling, writing concise reports and presenting findings to our clients.
Our analysis covers a broad range of topics including:
- policy development
- cost benefit analysis
- industry analysis and business strategy
- economic and financial modelling
- forecasting
- program review and evaluation
- regulation and industry reform
- international trade evaluation
- business cases and feasibility studies.
We leverage a variety of quantitative tools to provide robust insights, including our in-house Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models, macro and micro econometric models, input-output models and cost-benefit models.
There are frequent opportunities to work across service lines and interact with members from the actuary team to the program evaluation team.
What will I learn in the first year?
The first year will see you develop your analytical and problem-solving skills, learn how our quantitative models work and when and why they should be utilised, and develop your reporting and presentation skills.
Given the broad range of industries and topics our team works with, you will be exposed to a great deal of stimulating and challenging work. Our team will support your growth and you will be presented with opportunities to step up and add value to each engagement in your own way.
What’s the best part of the role?
The variety of work will keep you engaged, challenged and entertained. As you grow as a professional you can begin to specialise in the field that interests you the most.
The team offers regular feedback to ensure you maximise your potential as an economist / consultant.
You don’t feel like another cog of the machine. Given the team’s role and relatively small size, there is a satisfying feeling of being a significant contributor and team member.
Opportunity to interact with a variety of stakeholders outside KPMG such as clients from not-for-profits, to clients from government.
