In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?
The Deal Advisory Tax (Corporate Tax) team is a national, market-leading, team that assists clients with all tax aspects of corporate transactions, from tax due diligence to tax structuring, sell and buy side mergers & acquisitions (M&A) assistance, initial public offers and general corporate tax assistance.
Whilst we are a team of tax professionals, we are part of the wider Deals, Tax and Legal (DTL) team and we work closely with our Deals colleagues in the Transaction Services and M&A teams in relation to our M&A transactional work. The team regularly provides tax assistance in relation to the biggest corporate transactions in the Australian market. We also work closely with our colleagues in Corporate Tax, Indirect Tax and Law, also part of the wider DTL team.
The team’s clients include large corporates, private equity investors, superannuation funds and infrastructure and property companies. A large part of the work that the team does involves cross-border transactions and work with overseas KPMG offices.
What does the average day look like?
One of the greatest strengths of the Deal Advisory Tax (Corporate Tax) team is that the work is dynamic, and every day is different. The reason for this is that every transaction the team works on is unique. Graduates will learn how to review income tax returns and supporting workpapers to ask questions as part of a due diligence process, undertake project management in relation to M&A transactions, attend and take notes at client meetings, and analyse tax structuring matters. Whilst all of this might seem daunting, there are often precedents and experienced team members are always available to provide support.
What will I learn in the first year?
During your first year with the Deal Advisory Tax (Corporate Tax) team you will learn about the M&A sector and how corporate transactions are conducted, as well as learning about the Australian tax system. Your first year in the Deal Advisory Tax (Corporate Tax) team will open up many new paths for you, providing a balance of technical, business development and mentoring skills that you will be able to utilise as your career progresses.
What’s the best part of the role?
The best part of the role is that from the first day, you will be a valued and important part of a close-knit team. There is an inclusive, diverse and supportive culture within the team, and you will get to work with a number of team members, at all levels of seniority.
