Grad careers: Transformation Program Management

In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?

The Transformation Program Management team assists clients to execute their project portfolios which drive their business strategy. This means that we play multiple roles within large transformative projects, programs and portfolios, and work with clients from broad range of sectors to deliver business outcomes.

Many of our engagements are won with the proviso that we bring a team with us. This could be just a just a small handful, or in some cases we could provide upwards of 25 people across the firm. This certainly helps you get to know the people not only in our team but across KPMG.

What does the average day look like?

No one project is the same. Effective project management relies on people using skills and previous experience to adapt to new challenges. Working in our Transformation Program Management practice, you’ll leverage our project and program management experience, methodologies and tools to deliver a suite of organisational transformation services to our clients.

At the outset of any engagement our days are quite varied before a more consistent rhythm is established. Projects are subject to change, as are our days.

A typical project starts with defining the outcomes that support the clients’ vision of what their future-state looks like. This is followed by:

  • hands-on project planning
  • establishment of governance mechanisms
  • project monitoring and reporting
  • setting communication channels and rhythm
  • establishing quality standards and controls.
Some projects could then include specific business and IT components around planning, implementation and testing.

What will I learn in the first year?

The emphasis for your first year is observing how complex projects operate. You’ll have a more active participation in projects once you have a solid understanding of our clients’ needs and the services we can offer to assist in their transformation activities. When comfortable, this will lead to you having ownership of specific components of the project to deliver and drive client outcomes.

Some of the specific things you’ll learn include:

  • how large government and corporate entities operate and how organisational roles and structure are designed to deliver the business strategy
  • how large-scale change is triggered and implemented within a business
  • how to assess and communicate the impact of the strategic change to the client’s organisation
  • how to define the benefits to be delivered as a result of the project, how each will be measured and when they will be realised
  • how to effectively plan and cost projects
  • the fundamentals of project, program and portfolio management
  • the importance of Business & IT alignment in transformations.

What’s the best part of the role?

Gaining a skillset that is applicable in organisations all around the world. Our team is made up of a variety of seasoned project and technical delivery professionals to learn from. We have technical training mechanisms in place to support the on-the-job learnings to further help our more junior team members to reach those levels too. We also have an international flavour with a good proportion of our staff being born overseas.

On engagements you’ll help major clients navigate through the unknown and to avoid pitfalls whilst supporting their management and staff along the journey. You’ll gain a vested interest on the projects you work on and the people who play a part. The challenges you face provide for an exciting and rewarding work environment.
