After my first child, I was skeptical about taking on a full-time job because of the energy, time and dedication needed. Two years later, I got a job as a concert planner. Shortly after, when I was pregnant with my second child, I decided it was time for me to focus on raising my children, especially during their early years.
Then, an opportunity at KPMG presented itself, and for as long as I can remember, my dreams and aspirations have revolved around being an auditor. My passion for this line of work comes from the thrill of what each new day offers. I had the chance to fulfill my dream in one of the biggest auditing companies, worldwide.
As a single mother, I had a critical decision to make. But this was the moment I was waiting for all my life and sometimes you have to take a leap of faith! Starting out as an intern, I eventually came on board as a full-time employee.
I work 24-hours—childcare never stops. Being a single mother means I have to manage independently, and this is where organization and time-management skills are invaluable. I could not live without my calendar. It is vital to stay on top of your responsibilities so that they do not overwhelm you. If I were to give a piece of advice to any mother: always schedule some extra quality time for yourself to do the things you enjoy.
I draw inspiration from strong female leaders, like Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Angela Merkel. They have blazed the trail for women like me to believe that we can achieve anything with the right mindset. I was also fortunate enough to find myself in KPMG, a family that welcomed and supported me.
To all who are constantly put down and told what they can and cannot do, do not be afraid because you are the master of your reality. As said by Angela Merkel, “I might bend, but I will never break because it is in my nature as a strong woman.” Nothing can stop you from achieving your goals if you set your mind to it.
