Principal, Ignition Tax
John Modzelewski brings over 20 years of experience providing tax advice to public and private entities with extensive knowledge in industries such as private equity, power and utilities, pharmaceuticals, technology, media and entertainment, and diversified industrials. As the Chief Data Officer for the Tax function at KPMG and a principal in KPMG Tax Technology practice, John collaborates with clients and engagement teams to unlock actionable insights and opportunities from their data and benchmarking signals. These insights are enhanced through collaboration with KPMG Advisory and Audit functions. John also works closely with the AI and Digital Innovation teams to leverage the power of generative AI and machine learning in tax data and analysis.
John leads the development and deployment of financial and tax models at KPMG, which calculate the impact of key U.S. and global tax reform provisions. These models facilitate scenario planning to address the effects of new tax laws and regulations. He collaborates with federal tax compliance engagement teams, utilizing both KPMG-internal and third-party tax compliance tools to enhance analytics and data flow, ensuring tax returns align with new tax rules and KPMG interpretative positions. John frequently presents on current tax topics to professional associations across the United States, focusing on quantitative issues related to the interaction and application of U.S. tax laws, as well as the growing intersection between tax and advanced technology solutions.
In addition to his data and modeling expertise, John has advised U.S. and non-U.S. corporations on the U.S. tax implications of business transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, internal restructurings, divestitures, distributions and redemptions, debt and stock offerings, and recapitalizations. John has also provided tax due diligence services for public and private acquirers and sellers in various transactions, as well as tax advice to corporate clients in and emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center.
